Mette Juul HM84-Thorupstrand The blue wooden boats in Thorupstrand are constructed based on a combination of ancient knowledge about clinker building and modern technology. This makes the boats both cultural-historical and future-proof at the same time. The hulls of the boats are made of oak, which makes them light and elastic. They can withstand hitting hard on the reefs and being pulled up on the beach – the landing site – without taking damage. At the same time, the boats are designed with care for the environment in mind, partly because wood is a far more sustainable material than fiberglass.
The Nordic clinker-built wooden boats – and the traditions around them – are now officially recognized by UNESCO as a living cultural heritage that must be secured and preserved for future generations.Wooden boats were built with special method, which is characterized by the longitudinal planks overlapping each other at the outer edges, and here they are kept together with seams or ship nails. The boat is then braced on the inside with custom pieces of wood that make up the boat’s ribs. This construction method is called clinker construction.
